OUGD504- Blog task

TASK:

Further reading:
  • The production manual by Ambrose/Harris
  • Production for graphic designers by Alan Pipes- Ed. 5

Laser/die cutting:

The effect of using this technique on this book creates something almost surreal looking book that includes the insert that pulls out where you find the book underneath. The image has been cut to create a flesh/burn look to the face making it look very creepy. Although a clever effect, its not a book I would be personally drawn to.

Foil blocking:

The foil blocking technique has been used on the masthead of Vogue, this effect emphasises its luxurious feel and thus appeals to its target audience. I am unsure of the purpose of this besides to make the front cover more aesthetic, it gives it more dimension rather than it just being a flat magazine cover.

Duplexing:

This particular book uses a variation of paper stocks, the book itself is only very small in size so the variations of stocks make the book a bit more interesting to interact with compared to it being repetitive throughout.

 Tipped-on:

This book by Grayson Perry has its own insert that holds inside it the actual book with the content in. The outside insert is covered with an illustration compared to the book which is just one colour with text on. I think this execution makes the book a lot more special for the reader, it certainly makes it more interactive and almost makes the book feel a lot more luxury as it has to be covered with something else on top of it.

Laminate:

The outside of this magazine has been laminated, this was the hardest effect of a book to find in the library as each book is covered with what looks and feels like a laminated cover in order to keep the book protected. This particular magazine had an incredibly laminated look and feel to it, it makes the magazine very luxurious feeling and gives it a lot more durability as its less likely to become damaged or the pages to be ripped.

Tipped-in page:

This was the closest thing I could find to a tipped-in page.

Embossing/debossing:

The masthead on this magazine cover has been embossed, it has a really raised effect so it ultimately higher than the rest of the flat page/text on the cover. The colour of the title is incredibly bold and the embossed lettering has a shiny effect on top of it also. I think this gives the magazine a lot of dimension and creates an interesting cover compared to it all being a matte effect.
