OUGD503: Chosen Logo

This is the final logo I have decided to go with, I think this is the more successful out of the two and the one I am most happy with. I like this logo as it has a lot of depth to it and it would definitely be a logo that would draw my attention to it and want to know what its about. The use of the three cactus plants symbolises growth, something which the sustainability committee has done over the years as it has become more known around the university and more people have paid attention to it.

Colours used on the logo.

OUGD503: Final Logo's

Logo 1:

Out of the different variations I have designed for this logo, I have decided to go with this one. Mostly down to the colours used within this logo, I think they are all on the earthy side therefore link in with sustainability. The logo is of good quality therefore if it needed to be shrunk or blown up then it should still look of a high standard.

Logo 2:

This is the final design I went for with the second logo, I chose this because the colours all compliment each other and again it is a high quality logo so like the other one, if it needed to be blown up any more or shrunk it wouldn't loose its quality. The only thing with this logo is I had the intention to have each sun beam text of the various activities the sustainability committee have to offer, however I could not find any evidence of these anywhere so the logo is not quite how I would have wanted it to be.

OUGD503: Logo Development 2

After creating a small sketch of this idea, I thought just solely making it on Photoshop would be a lot easier and certainly a lot neater. I have only played around slightly with the colours on this as I knew I wouldn't have wanted it to be any other colour besides yellows and oranges.

Above are some screenshots of variations of type included in the middle of the logo design. Again I have just simply added 'The sustainability committee' in the middle of the sun so people are made aware what the logo is raising awareness for.

OUGD503: Logo Development 1

Refined sketches of the cactus plant that I intend to use on the logo. I did a few variations to work out which would be the neatest.

I then took these into Photoshop where I could refine the plant and add colour to it. Above shows some variations of colours used on the plant. I wanted to keep a colour scheme of mostly green to tie into the sustainability aspect of the logo.
On the pots of the plants, I have added on each one the sustainability committee so people can instantly know what the logo is for and why it may be placed around the university as there are already a lot of posters around the building.

To make the logo more accessible to different materials and forms, I have made it into a circle shape. This way the logo can be used with or without the circle and can offer itself to different formats.

OUGD503: Idea Development and Logo Sketches

-The Sustainability Committee
-Growing
-Blooming
-Blossoming
-Expanding
-Awareness
-Inhale/Exhale
-Positivity

Idea 1:

Conversation logo idea, one speech bubble asks the other about sustainability. This is quite a witty logo, something not too serious but can draw attention to The Sustainability Committee if people are not too familiar with it.

Idea 2 and 3:

LEFT:
Idea of 'growing', the committee is growing, the awareness of sustainability is growing, the activities are growing.

RIGHT:
An illustration of a to-do list. Will highlight all the various activities and things that the committee is doing. Simple logo idea but has the potential to become quite unreadable when made into different sizes.

Idea 4

More of a desk scene, still with the notebook alongside it but this is intended to create more of an atmosphere. Again as my annotations say, this could become too complicated.

Idea 5:

The simplest logo design out of the 5. A sun shape has lots of positive connotations surrounding it, it also links with the sustainability idea. If I were to develop this further, I think I would perhaps turn the sun beams into the various activities that the committee have to offer.

OUGD503: Logo Inspiration

Image used as the Conscious Creatives banner on their Facebook group.

Images found on Pinterest:

Usually, when it comes to finding inspiration for designs, Pinterest will be the first place I head to for some quick fire ideas which will then usually lead me to come up with a few design ideas in my head which hopefully I can translate into some sketches.

This isn't something I would use as a logo, due to the fact its incredibly long (a poster). However, I am enjoying the overall look to this and its calming feel instantly makes you want to be a greener person, this is something I want to try and portray though the logo.

The above two images, again aren't really the kind of design/style I have in mind for the logo, but its good to keep in mind the kind of typical sustainable designs you would typically see and people would typically associate to. The colours in these two images are very on point, I don't really want to draw away from the typical neutrals, greens and blues that you would typically associate with sustainability because I don't think it would be very appropriate or practical.

The final above 2 images are more like the approach I want to take with this logo design. I don't want the logo to be too busy or over complicated to the point where there is too much going on and it becomes difficult to understand what is going on/people don't know what the logo is about.

The brief states the logo needs to be simple and flexible as it will be used on many different forms.

OUGD503: Sustainability Logo Ideas

OUGD503: Analysing The Brief

Sustainability Definition:

  1. the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed.
  2. Environmental Sciencethe quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting naturalresources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance:
The committee is developing sustainability standards for products that use energy.

-Below is what I have found on the universities website on sustainability, hopefully this should make their aim a lot clearer and I can incorporate these ideas into my logo designs.

Leeds Arts University recognises the importance of embedding sustainability within its practices, both operationally and educationally.

We operate within a University Sustainability Framework, which helps educate our students about long-term, cultural, economic and environmental health and vitality, together with the importance of linking social, financial, and environmental well being.
We aim to:
  • Develop and enhance our Estate by identifying opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint and optimise our building systems, fabric and infrastructure to be more energy efficient
  • Foster inquiry into sustainability through teaching, learning and research
  • Embed sustainability within the curriculum (environmental– societal, economic)
  • Ensure our graduates are sustainability literate, equipped with the skills, knowledge and understanding to live and work in a complex and changing world
  • Ensure all staff and students are aware of their individual and collective responsibilities regarding sustainable practice
  • Actively encourage and support student engagement throughout all sustainability developments in the University
  • Share knowledge across all areas of University activity to raise awareness of and ensure effective participation in sustainability practices
Our Sustainability Committee plans, supports and monitors the University’s sustainability activity and how it adheres to the University’s Sustainability Framework.

These bullet points explain what the university do in terms of keeping it sustainable, it points out how they encourage staff and students to be more aware of this sustainable mentality and ensure its awareness is kept up to date with.

OUGD503: Student Brief Competition, Sustainability Logo and Visual Identity

The Brief:

The College would like to offer a paid opportunity to all students to design the logo for all sustainability activities and initiatives at the College. The Sustainability Committee has identified the need to visually identify all sustainability activities within the College in order to raise awareness of such initiatives and the positive work being carried out.

Background and Considerations:

Leeds Arts University recognises the importance of embedding sustainability within its practices, both operationally and educationally. We operate within a University Sustainability Framework, which helps educate our students about long-term, cultural, economic and environmental health and vitality, together with the importance of linking social, financial, and environmental well-being. The Sustainability Committee is responsible for promoting and embedding such work throughout the College.

The logo could be used across materials such as print and posters, recycling equipment and bins, digital content, competition and prize materials, awards and other promotional materials. Therefore the logo should be simple and flexible, consistently identifying all sustainability activities and campaigns across the Uni. A minimum submission is a logo but you may also want to propose or recommend a colour scheme and/or other graphics.

OUGD503: Final Chosen Cover

I have chosen this as my final book cover design. Out of all of the different variations that I have created, I feel this is the one that has worked the best and is the most effective. The design draws on a heavy use of typography, something which the judges would be looking for in the cover design. It's also a contemporary take on the classic style of the penguin book covers, the miss match of various fonts used makes the cover quite playful. By not over complicating the use of colours used on the cover, it still holds its classic 'animal farm' appearance therefore should hopefully appeal to its target audience. The composition of the cover, text, imagery etc, works nicely as its not over crowded or messy looking, everything works in harmony with each other.

OUGD503: Full Cover Developments 2

These developments have also turned out really well, I do prefer these over the first lot because they have a bit more going on while still quite minimalist and the cover is not crowded up at all. I have stuck with the same shade of red to the previous cover because it works the most effective, its not too deep or aggressive like some of the darker shades of red.

These are the cover optionals in their final format, with the spine and back cover included too.

I played around with different cover colours but stuck with red because it made the cover stand out the most and draw the readers attention to it.

Although this design is very simple, I think it works really well and I am happy with its outcome. Minimalistic book covers often work well and I do think it will appeal to its target audience.

OUGD503: Ideas/Design Development 2

For the second design, I decided to focus heavily on typography and specifically the quote 'four legs good two legs bad', as it is such a famous quote in the book I thought it would be good to include this on the front cover. I played about with two different fonts as I wanted them to look almost scruffy and handwritten as if it were done by the animals.

With just the typography on the cover design, it looked quite bland and plain so adding in some imagery broke it up a bit and added more depth to the cover.

Just in Photoshop, I created a silhouette of a pig and placed it behind the typography on the cover.

OUGD503: Idea/Design Development 1

The idea behind these designs were to keep the front cover incredibly minimal and just use the motif of a pigs nose, as I think a lot of people associate animal farm with the pig Neapolitan and make an instant connection. As this book is incredibly famous, it doesn't necessarily need a lot of imagery to make it stand out but the use of the pig nose and the block red colour draws on the storyline and therefore its political storyline too.

At first I decided to use real imagery of a pigs nose, however I was not liking the look this gave as it was quite strange and the typography wasn't working alongside it.

Switching it up to a more illustrated/animated pigs nose gave the book cover a much neater look to it and an all round better appearance. Changing the title to a white coloured font also softened its look and made it less harsh looking. I played around with the positioning and layout of the covers until I was happy with the final way it looked.
